If you need to cut some concrete, you first want to make sure you protect yourself before you start cutting into concrete. Cutting concrete can create a lot of dust and is a semi-dangerous task, so you want to make sure you are equipped right before you cut into some concrete.
Protect Your Eyes
The first thing you want to protect is your eyes. When you grind into concrete, it can create a lot of dust. You don't want all that fine dust getting into your eyes. The best way to protect your eyes is with protective eyewear that encloses your eyes. The protective eyewear should go around your eyes and make contact with your face. You don't want to wear eyewear that looks like a pair of glasses, you want to wear eyewear that looks more like a pair of goggles.
This will help keep you from dust and particles that could fly up and get into your eyes even if you were wearing protective eyewear that looks more like glasses. The best way to keep all debris out of your eyes is by wearing protective goggles, not glasses.
Protect Your Lungs
Second, you don't want to breathe in all the dust that you will be releasing into the air as you cut the concrete. If nothing else, wear a simple face mask or put a handkerchief over your face.
However, to really protect yourself, invest in a nicer breathing mask. A nice breathing mask will go over your mouth and nose. It will have two filters, one on each side of the mask, that will filter the air before you breathe it in. These masks cost a little more money, but will greatly increase your protection from dust and chemicals.
Protect Your Ears
Cutting into concrete is not a quiet process. The diamond-blade wet saw that you are going to use is going to create a lot of sound that can be damaging to your ears. Your hearing is a valuable resource that you can't get back once you lose it. Invest in some construction ear covers or some noise canceling headphones.
When wearing ear protection though, keep in mind that it is even more important for you to be mindful of your environment as your hearing will be a little muffled.
Protect Your Body
Cutting concrete is not something that should be done in a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. You are going to be creating a lot of dust and particles, and you don't want to end up with your skin covered in dust or with cuts due to flying debris. When cutting concrete, it is smart to wear a long sleeve shirt and pants. You should also put on sturdy, heavy shoes that will protect your feet in case something gets dropped on them.
Before you start cutting through your concrete with a wet saw, take some time to protect yourself so you don't end up with concrete dust in your lungs or eyes, or all over your skin. The first key to doing any construction job is safety.
